Location

Stanislaus County Office of Education

1100 H Street Modesto, CA 95354

Description

The Stanislaus County Office of Education, in partnership with the California Department of Education (CDE), is hosting a stakeholder meeting to review and gather feedback on the first complete draft of California’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) State Plan. During this meeting, participants will be provided an overview of the State Plan and have an opportunity to go into greater depth on topics of greatest concern to participants.

Who should participate: The following stakeholder groups are highly encouraged to participate:

  • LEAs, including LEAs in rural areas;
  • Representatives of Indian tribes located in the State;
  • Teachers, principals, other school leaders, paraprofessionals, specialized instructional support personnel, and organizations representing such individuals;
  • Charter school leaders;
  • Parents and families;
  • Community-based organizations;
  • Civil rights organizations, including those representing students with disabilities, English learners, and other historically underserved students;
  • Institutions of higher education (IHEs);
  • Employers;
  • Representatives of private school students;
  • Early childhood educators and leaders; and
  • The public.

Any interested member of the public is welcome to attend, and we are eager to hear from educators at all levels and capacities, parents and families, and community-based and civil rights organizations.

Why you should participate: The ESSA replaces the No Child Left Behind Act and represents over $2 billion in federal funds that are meant to address the needs of historically underserved populations of students, such as students in poverty, students of color, and English learners. This is an opportunity to make your voice heard in support of the state’s most vulnerable students.

What to bring: Participants are strongly encouraged to bring with them a web-enabled device or a cell phone that is able to send text messages for providing their input electronically. However, this is not a requirement for participation. Participants without a device or phone will be provided an alternative means for providing input.

Reasonable Accommodation and Interpreter Services: Pursuant to state and federal statutes, individuals with a disability may request reasonable accommodation to attend or participate in the policy input meeting. Requests for reasonable accommodation or language interpreters must be received three business days prior to the meeting and should be directed to Joy Kessel, California Department of Education, by e-mail at jkessel@cde.ca.gov or by phone at 916-445-7765.

The public comment period begins May 22 and ends June 30. If you are unable to attend a stakeholder meeting, any interested member of the public may review the draft State Plan and provide public comment by visiting the Phase IV Stakeholder Toolkit Web page, which will be available at http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/es/essaopptopart.asp once the public comment period begins.
